Staying Motivated During the Job Hunt

The job hunt isn’t always pretty. It usually involves filling out a lot of job applications, not getting called back, and frequent disappointments. Here are our tips for staying motivated throughout the job hunting process.

Visualize What You Want

Whether you believe in the concept of manifesting or not, visualization can help you keep putting one foot in front of the other. Don’t just tell yourself you need a job. Think through what a day in your ideal position would look like. Where are you? What are you doing? How much do you make? What are the perks? More broadly, what are your career goals and how is your next job going to get you there? The more you can see yourself in your dream role, the more motivated you will be to make it happen.

Set Realistic Goals and Rewards

If you try to apply for 30 jobs in a day, you’ll burn out fast. Instead, set realistic goals for the next day, week, and month of your job hunt. Start small, perhaps by building out your LinkedIn profile and making new connections. Apply only for jobs you think you might like, and take the time to customize your resume and cover letter for each one. When you’ve finished a day’s tasks, give yourself a small reward. Maybe you could meet a friend for coffee or take a hot bubble bath.

Get Inspired

Follow people who inspire you on social media. Listen to their podcasts and audio books. These can be leaders in your industry or simply people whose story resonates with you. Spend at least a few minutes each day listening to them or reading the things they write. Consider these 6 confidence building tips before you interview. If you are working with a temp agency, maintain open communication as to your work status and skills. Find Support

No one is an island, and job hunting can be demoralizing. Reach out to trusted loved ones. Let them know how you’re feeling, and allow them to lift you up. Their positive energy may be just the boost you need to find new motivation in your job search.

Work with a Recruiter

If you’re tired of sending your resume into a black hole, never to be heard from again, consider working with a recruiter. Staffing agencies are experts at pairing job seekers with employers who are actively ready to hire. They also provide a range of direct hire services, from resume reviews to interview coaching, all at no cost to job seekers. You might just find that your motivation increases when you have a recruiter by your side!
