Spend Time with Other Shift Workers
Hang out with your coworkers or make friends with people in an entirely different industry who also do shift work. Either way, forming bonds with others who are outside of the 9 to 5 will give you the chance to socialize during your off time. In today’s 24/7 world, it’s amazing how many people are on schedules just like yours!
Keep the Lines of Communication Open
When it comes to friends and relatives who work traditional hours, be sure to keep the communication flowing. Make the effort to explain your body clock and what times would be good for you to make plans. Perhaps you could have “date night” after your spouse gets home and before you head off to work. Or you could meet an early bird friend at the gym right after your shift.
Make the Most of Vacation Time
One of the best things you can do for yourself and your personal life is to actually take your PTO. This is true for those who work daytime hours as well, but it’s especially important for those who do shift work. It will give you the opportunity to spend uninterrupted time with your loved ones, as well as to catch up on much-needed rest. If you change your schedule during your vacation, though, be sure to change it back at least a couple of days before you return to work.
Stay Positive
Keep in mind all the reasons that you chose shift work in the first place. Maybe you’re a natural night owl or you’re doing it for the pay differential or it best fits around other things in your life. Whenever you start feeling down, remind yourself of the benefits of your unique schedule.
