Weighing the Options: Moving vs. Staying for Career Advancement

Did you just receive an offer for the perfect job…only it happens to be thousands of miles away with no opportunity to work remotely? If so, you’re probably debating with yourself as to whether it would be worth making the move. There are a lot of factors that go into moving vs. staying, so let’s unpack it.

The Position Itself

First, think through the position you are being offered. Try to find out as much as you can about not only the job title, but also the daily duties. Can you picture yourself feeling engaged day in and day out? Also, think about the company culture, as well as the salary and benefits package. Does it feel like the right fit?

Career Development

How does the job fit into your overall career development track? Moving for what is effectively a lateral transfer generally isn’t worth it, unless the new company offers advancement opportunities that aren’t available locally. But if it would represent a significant step up the career ladder, the new job might be worth it.

Lifestyle Changes

How does the new city compare to where you currently live? Would you have to trade life in the urban core for a more rural lifestyle, or vice versa? How much longer or shorter would your new commute be? Would you have to sell your house or pay thousands of dollars to get out of a rental contract? Does the new company cover moving expenses?

Effects on Your Family

Unless you’re a single person with no family responsibilities, you can’t solely consider the effects the move would have on you. How it would impact your loved ones is also important. Is your spouse currently in their dream job and, if so, would a transfer be possible? Do you have aging parents or other relatives who need you to remain close by? If you have kids, how do the schools in the new city compare to the school they currently attend? Could you manage without help from your extended family?

There are no right or wrong answers, just lots of things to consider. Sit down and talk it all out with your family and friends. With a bit of soul searching, you will be able to determine whether moving is the right choice.
