How to Beat Boredom on the Job

If you’ve ever been bored on the job, you’re certainly not alone! After all, if it was always fun, it wouldn’t be called work. But there’s no reason to stay bored. Here are some of our top tips and tricks to help you have more fun at work and beat boredom on the job.

Gamify Your Projects

It’s hard to be bored when you’re playing games. Gather your coworkers for a friendly speed challenge. If you’re alone, set a timer for 30 minutes and see how much you can get accomplished before it goes off. Or think of your project as a puzzle and focus on fitting the pieces together as tightly as possible.

Listen to Music or Podcasts

Music can be a great way to improve focus. It gives your subconscious something to do instead of thinking about how bored you are. This frees up your conscious mind to pay attention to the task at hand. Just be sure not to pick something you can’t resist singing along with, at least if you work in close proximity to others.

Make Deeper Connections

If you’re feeling bored at work, you are probably not the only one. Take advantage of this time to chat with the people around you. Informal “watercooler chat” builds trust and connections, ultimately promoting team bonding. You might also consider making plans to go for lunch or after-work drinks together, giving all of you something to look forward to.

Ask for More Responsibilities

Maybe you’re bored because you have learned all you can in your current position. It’s human nature to strive for more, so don’t be shy about speaking up. Maybe you can take on a new project or work toward becoming a shift leader. A new challenge may be just what you need to shake off the boredom and start having fun again. Take advantage of your employer’s learning and development opportunities.

Everyone gets bored at work now and then. But the tips above can help you break out of your rut and start enjoying your job again.
