How to Prepare for Your First Day of Work

So you’ve landed a new job. Congratulations! Now you’ll need to prepare for your first day of work. You’re probably both excited and a bit nervous, but following a few simple tips can help ensure that your first day is as smooth as possible.

Make Arrangements

If you’ve been out of work for a while, you are probably handling many tasks at home during the day. Sit down with the other members of your household to figure out a new schedule. Does your spouse need to take over the grocery shopping? Can your teenager pick up your little one from school? Do you need to make arrangements for childcare or pet care? Making plans in advance to keep your home running smoothly will take a lot of the pressure off your shoulders.

Take Care of Appointments

Is it time for your annual physical or dental checkup? If you are switching insurance companies, you may want to take care of these appointments now so that you’ll have time to look for new providers. Even if your insurance doesn’t change, you may prefer to take care of any necessary appointments to avoid taking time off early in your new job.

What about appointments that will help you feel your best? Do you want to visit the hair salon or get a manicure? Schedule these visits right away to make sure you can get in right before your first day of work.

Practice Commuting

The last thing you want is to be late on your first day. Make the commute a few times, at approximately the time of day you’ll be going to work, to learn the traffic patterns or public transportation schedules. For at least the first week, leave 10 minutes earlier than you need to, to account for traffic or other delays.

Decide What to Wear

If you’re not sure how to dress, call and ask. Otherwise, choose a conservative, comfortable outfit that fits the level of formality in the workplace. Lay out your outfit several days in advance, including your shoes, jewelry, and handbag. Look everything over with a critical eye to determine if it needs to be washed or mended.

Get Organized

Pack any information and documents you were provided into a professional briefcase or portfolio. If you’re not sure about lunch arrangements, add a sandwich or other simple food just in case. Be sure to bring a notebook and a pen, along with any other materials you were advised to have on hand.
